Coherence potentials are for a group of neurons what an action potential is for one cell

As a complicated waveform is replicated in a nearby brain area a notion of entanglement in the brain is proposed

Scientists had previously discovered the phenomenon of "phase locking": the electrical activity of neurons in separate parts of the brain can oscillate simultaneously at the same frequency. This is like a brain signature designating neurons working on the same task. 

 

The phenomenon termed “coherence potentials”, was much more complicated than the simple phase-locked oscillations and always matched each other in amplitude as well as in frequency. They consisted of sophisticated waveforms that were replicated for instance at area 10 millimeters away. 

 

For example, if you smell a flower you have a very complicated activity pattern in a specific brain area (let us say « smell center ») that appears milliseconds later e.g. at the visual center.

 

Coherence potentials for a group of neurons are similar to an action potential for one cell in the sense that  a specific threshold has to be exceeded for initiation.

"Amidst the background hum of electrical signaling generated by neurons in the brain, scientists have found that local groups of neurons, firing in coordination, sometimes create a signal that is mirrored instantaneously and precisely by other groups of neurons across the brain.  These transient episodes of coherence across different parts of the brain may be an electrical signature of thought and actions."

 

 

Blog of one of the authors cites a subsequent paper where authors related these coherence potentials to simple motor behaviors in a human patient:

In figure C below we see among other the coherence potential for clenching one's fist.
